Author Notes. Gordon Korman was born in Montreal, Canada on October 23, 1963. When his 7th-grade English teacher told the class they could have 45 minutes a day for four months to work on a story of their choice, Korman began This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall.
He was also the class monitor for the Scholastic TAB Book Club, so he sent his novel to the address on the TAB flyer, and a few days after his 14th birthday, he had a book contract with Scholastic. By the time he graduated from high school, he had published five other novels and several articles for Canadian newspapers. He received a BFA degree from New York University with a major in Dramatic Writing and a minor in Film and TV. He has written over 75 books for children and young adults including the Swindle series, The Juvie Three, and two books of poetry written by the fictional character Jeremy Bloom. Scott Fitzgerald High. The stories correspond in many particulars: new kid Jake Garrett, cool, mysterious, different, has won over the it crowd with raucous parties at his subdivision McMansion. Popular opinion turns against Jake when alpha male Todd Buckley suspects the newcomer, rightly, of pursuing his best girl, Didi, and turns up an ugly secret: Jake was once (gasp!) a big nerd. So begins Garrett's plunge to ignominy. The Nick Carraway character, Rick, offers a wry, comic voice, but constricting Fitzgerald's plot to the narrow world of high school, and scaling back the major crises (there's no death, murder, or suicide), leaves behind a drama that has more in common with a John Waters movie than a great American novel. Yet even as young adults feel insulted by the novel's portrayal of teenagers as nerd haters, beer guzzlers, and herd followers, they're also likely to read it with a wink and a smirk as they catch the sundry Gatsby allusions.Jennifer Mattson Copyright 2003 Booklist. The Jay Gatsby figure is nerd turned bon vivant Jake Garrett; Daisy Buchanan has become Didi, the impossibly beautiful girl who is dating Todd Buckley (i.e., Tom Buchanan) despite his infidelities. Jake's weekly parties escalate in size and intensity, all part of his plan to get closer to Didi, whom he tutored in math several years before at a different school and has idealized ever since.
In the midst of the banality and posturing of one keg party after another, two mature characters emerge: narrator Rick Paradis, who seems to not fit in with the crowd from the beginning, and the remarkable Dipsy, who starts off as comic relief but turns out to be perhaps the wisest person in the book: he alone understands that high school is, after all, just a few years, and that there is much more of life to come. Korman's prose hits its mark: a hung-over bunch of football players becomes 'statuary in shoulder pads,' the noise at a party rises 'up to the point of pain' and the mournful hero is 'unmade, not by fire, but by cold, smooth indifference.' Gordon Korman answers the question with humor and insight in Jake, Reinvented (Hyperion, 2003). Jake has changed his image by joining the football team, throwing beer bashes for the in-crowd, and hiding all evidence of his geek life. For a while, it seems like the chameleon act is working-his heart throb, image-conscious Didi is cheating on her quarterback boyfriend to be with the now ultra-cool Jake.

Then his newly constructed world falls apart when an angry football player is injured at a wild party and Jake's misguided chivalry lands him in jail. His punishment may fit the crime; he has to move again, this time to Texas to live with his mother. The story is seen through the eyes of Rick, a wry teammate, who is questioning the high school clique scene and trying to figure out his own love life. Jim Colby balances the story's comic and serious elements with perfectly paced narration. The recording has a sturdy case and well-marked cover and cassettes, as well as good sound quality. Korman uses teen dialogue that rings true to present realistic teens grappling with the pressures to be popular and conform.
