Afetrnoon folks, Turned up for work yesterday and was given the keys to the only manual gearbox waggon in the fleet, a Scania R420 highline. I felt a little worried about this as i've never driven a manual gearbox since my test. One of the guys from the office was kind enough to go through it with me and after a quick ride round the yard everything was fine. This is where the problems started, firstly i was given a fully loaded decker and was heading to Scotland via the A66, Mmm i thought, gonna be using this gearbox quite a bit! Once coupled up i was off down the road, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.crunch grind, crunch grind 5th pulling away.just! After a full 15 hour day i must have found 4th gear 5 times, what am i doing wrong? Why wouldn't it go in?
When i got back to the yard i looked all over for 4th gear and still coudn't find it!! Regards Smokinbarrels (Automatic Gearbox for me!!! quote=' what am i doing wrong?

Quote Shouldn't this be in the 'gay truckers post'??? Sorry smokinbarrells couldn't resist it! Could maybe be a problem specific to your truck, I've had a couple of dodgy motors in the past and it's been a problem with the linkage etc. From my experience (albeit very limited on Scania's) there isn't a common problem similar to what you have experienced so it may just be a wee fault with your truck.

We rarely took the needle beyond 1,500rpm in our progression through the gears, moving off from rest using 1-high and 3-low and then changing into high range and 4-high, followed by 5-low and a succession of half gears through to top.
Choosing a full gear in the upper ratio costs a full 500rpm, leaving the motor too low in the rev range if the 1,500rpm ceiling is respected. Courtesy of Road Transport.com SENIOR MEMBER Posts: 34928 Joined: Sun Feb 08, 2004 11:47 pm Location: Melbourne Derby & East Yorkshire.
The Scania 12 speed gearbox does not like to be rushed when changing from 3rd (hi/lo split) in low range to 4th(hi/lo split) in high range especially when the gearbox oil is cold. If over the years this has been 'banged in' by the usual driver/drivers it only gets worse, if it's been 'run-in' from new the problem is reduced i.e. One trick to warm the gear box oil is to flick the hi/lo range change switch several times to get some movement/heat in the box.
Also always set off in 1st gear when loaded or you will fry the clutch! imho - I'll get my coat.
Scania 12+2-speed overdrive range-splitter gearbox with Scania Opticruise and Retarder. Scania’s modular system allows Scania R-series trucks to be equipped with a range of gearboxes, from the 8-speed range-change gearbox all the way up to the top-of-the-line 12+2-speed range-splitter gearbox. Low-rev approach enhances fuel economy The optional overdrive feature allows for low and economical cruising revs. This is in line with Scania’s low-rev approach, where peak torque is available at low revs, enhancing fuel economy. To further improve driveability, Scania R-series trucks can be equipped with the Scania Opticruise automated gear changing system, as well as Scania Retarder – an auxiliary braking system first introduced in 1993. The most recent addition to the gearbox range is a 4,100 Nm freewheeling retarder that automatically disengages and enters a freewheeling mode when not active, thus reducing fuel consumption.
