Thank you for looking at this wonderful buy!!
The S200 was the first version, and it was Husqvarna's first venture into the plastic shell type machines. It was one of the worst designs that I have ever seen, and when they brought it out, I refused to have it in my store. For some strange reason, they resented this, and thus began the journey that ended with my break from the company whose products I had sold and serviced for about 35 years. My biggest complaint was that in order to service/adjust even minor items, you had to remove the shells from the machine, and this was not a simple procedure. The year after I refused to sell them, I was still a dealer, and I attended the meeting where they introduced the 'new, improved version.' (I believe this is when they dropped the 'S'.) The claim was that 'these would solve any problems that you have had with the earlier models.' (They didn't) When the floor was open for discussion, numerous dealers started asking what they were to do with all of the older series that they still had in stock.

Viking's answer was that they should run big sales and get rid of them. The dealers tried to explain that this would only make them either lose customers or have to take them back, but it all fell on deaf ears. I remember one of my employees telling me that a year earlier she had thought I was crazy when I refused to sell them, but now she was beginning to think I might have actually 'been smarter than the average bear.'
$15 is a good price. I've seen bookends go for more than that. Bill, Thank you so much for the info. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond to my question.
It has been difficult to find info for this machine. I am not a sewing machine expert, but I can see where the case would be a real problem to get into. I bought this in hopes that I could clean it up and get it into nice enough shape to give to my teenage granddaughter as her first sewing machine. I noticed in the manual they don't require oiling.
It goes against the grain for me to know that it is such an old machine and can't be oiled. In your opinion, aside from the casing, is the sewing machine itself pretty good mechanically with the quality that Viking puts into their higher end machines? What year(s) were they made? The number on the bottom of this one says: Type S2 15, 3352782.

Is this machine good enough to handle heavy fabrics (denim/seams). Thank you very much for your help and anything else you can tell me about this one. 'I can see where the case would be a real problem to get into.' That was obviously their intent.
'I noticed in the manual they don't require oiling. It goes against the grain for me to know that it is such an old machine and can't be oiled.' If you can get into it, use Triflow, so that you get a coating of Teflon between the parts. 'In your opinion, aside from the casing, is the sewing machine itself pretty good mechanically with the quality that Viking puts into their higher end machines?' Personally, I think that the last 'exceptional' machine that they made was the 6570 in the late 1970s.
The 100 & 600 series mechanicals that followed were pretty good. The first computer (6690) was a disaster, and the following 900 series computers were famous for failed circuit boards and transformers. Since then, they have fallen behind the Japanese mfgrs in quality, and their prices have become absurd.
'What year(s) were they made? The number on the bottom of this one says: Type S2 15, 3352782.' Early 1990s 'Is this machine good enough to handle heavy fabrics (denim/seams).' Whatever it will do, just appreciate that it is doing it for you at the modest price you paid. Just don't put any more money into it.
'Thank you very much for your help and anything else you can tell me about this one.' Two of its quirks that stand out in my mind is that when the legs of a buttonhole are out of balance, it's almost impossible to get them right, and it is frequently difficult to get them to wind bobbins correctly. You're welcome, Carrie.
