I was wondering what software people are using for In System calibration of their embedded projects? At the high end, there are of course 'Industry standard' calibration and data analysis packages, such as INCA, ATLAS, or Vision etc but these are generally expensive and a bit of an overkill for use with an 8 bit or small micro system.

I guess people 'roll their own' in many cases, using a propriety serial coms, and software written in the usual languages (VBA/Python etc)? I'd love to write a simple but robust std windows software package for basic calibration and data analysis, but i suspect the task is not to be underestimated! Love to hear peoples opinions / experiences on this subject;-).

And also amongst scientists.

Almost anyone will be and can be implementing analysis and calibration; includes assistants, interns, and cooperative education students. I should have been a bit clearer! By 'calibration' i mean the process of determining and optimising the functional control parameters for an embedded device, rather than physical 'calibrating' of the system hardware (timing, analogue voltages etc). Most embedded systems have parameters that are unique to their application, and hence need to be set or reset in situ. Software packages such as ETAS's INCA do that, by offering the user (relatively) transparent access to those parameters and also acting to stream near real time data to that user so they can see /record the effect of their changes: In the automotive world, INCA is pretty much industry std, and uses CCP/XCP as it's transport layer, and uses standardised protocols (ASAM/ASAP) The downside is the cost.

A part of the stream is 'user' (not the event framework, kernel, etc.) data of a number of types. Not GUI but console; send to MATLAB or GNU Octave for the GUI.
